Sunbird Energy (Sunbird) is an ASX listed (SNY) southern African focused coalbed methane (CBM) and unconventional gas explorer and developer.

The Company was incorporated in May 2011 with the objective of identifying and developing high quality gas projects in southern Africa with a view to meeting the region’s growing energy needs.

Drilling begins at Ermelo.

Sunbird is pleased to announce that drilling commenced on 20 March 2012 at its Ermelo Project, located approximately 200km south east of Johannesburg, South Africa, in the Witbank coal mining region.

About Us

Sunbird’s strategy is to explore, appraise and ultimately commercialise CBM and unconventional gas in southern Africa. The region combines the key attributes of an abundant coal resource together with a limited domestic gas supply and ever increasing energy demands.

To achieve this strategy Sunbird has formed a strategic alliance with African joint venture partner Umbono Capital Partners (Proprietary) Limited (Umbono), which will provide Sunbird with access to an experienced operational team and new project pipeline through a Management Services and New Ventures Agreement.

In conjunction with Umbono, Sunbird identified and appraised a number of potential projects throughout southern Africa. As a result of this process, Sunbird has acquired the following interests:

  • 74% of Pretzavest 37 (Propietary) Limited, which owns the South African Projects; and
  • 100% of Greatways Holdings Limited which owns the Botswana Project.

These holdings provide Sunbird with a portfolio of five CBM projects in different geological settings, across two of southern Africa’s investment markets, covering in excess of two million acres. Independent resource estimates for the portfolio indicate a Best Estimate of total Gas-In-Place of 5.3 Tcf, and up to a High Estimate of 29.2 Tcf.

Sunbird is conducting a phased exploration program that will delineate the resource base and demonstrate the commercial potential of its portfolio of CBM assets.
